Structure of the Indian Judiciary
The Indian judiciary system follows a hierarchical structure with the Supreme Court at the top, followed by High Courts at the state level, and District Courts at the district level.
Supreme Court of India
- Located in New Delhi
- Highest court and final court of appeal
- Comprises the Chief Justice of India and 33 other judges
- Has original, appellate, and advisory jurisdiction
- Guardian of the Constitution
High Courts
- Present in each state and some union territories
- Have jurisdiction over the entire state/UT
- Have original and appellate jurisdiction
- Can issue writs for enforcement of fundamental rights
District Courts
- Present in each district
- Civil Courts handle civil cases
- Criminal Courts (Sessions Courts and Magistrate Courts) handle criminal cases
- Family Courts handle family disputes
